New principal starts at IES Breckland

Published: Monday 3rd February 2014 at 18:00

Alison Tilbrook officially started work today, Monday 3rd February, as principal of IES Breckland after leaving her role as deputy headteacher at Iceni Academy in Methwold.

On a blog post on the IES Breckland website Ms Tilbrook said: "This is a new beginning for the school a new beginning for me. I am very passionate about teaching and learning and this school is crying out for someone who can drive teaching and learning - that is where it has to be at the top of its game.

"All teachers are going to be of the highest quality and give the students education they deserve.  I need people who I know are going to do the best job for the students. Competitive salaries and the IES group’s access to a recruitment network for international teachers will enable us to achieve this objective."

According to IES UK, Ms Tilbrook was appointed as the new Principal for IES Breckland following a rigorous recruitment and interview process during which she spoke with the company's senior management about their shared philosophy of education, and the importance she places on the right learning environment for students.

She added "I researched IES and I was very impressed with the philosophy, which fits so well with my own.  I have always had a belief that the way to get students to do their best is to have boundaries. I am also a great believer in praise where it is due.

"The ideas of tough love, high academic expectations and a safe calm environment, where teachers can teach and students can learn, fit so closely with my own.

"A good head leads from the front and has a vision of where they want to go, how to get there, and who to take with them.  I need to make sure, first of all, that the hearts and minds of the staff are with me, which will then bring onboard all stakeholders working together to get the students the best outcomes possible.

"A key point for me is that we will be putting students first, rather than data or targets. This will set us apart just as much as the increasingly international nature of the school."

Peter John Fyles, Chief Operating Officer of IES UK's parent organisation in Sweden, said on the same blog post: "I am delighted with the appointment of Ms Tilbrook. We have only just started the work which is needed to improve this school and raise standards to meet our expectations.  I was happy to get the ball rolling and I know that Ms Tilbrook has the vision, experience and passion required to complete the job. In her capable hands IES Breckland, and the students learning there, will go from strength to strength."

IES Breckland, which opened in September 2012, is expanding and has been taking on a new year-group each year.

As it grows the school has developed a new building, invested in three new mini buses and will implement the first IES-funded student exchange programme to Sweden this April, all of which represents a significant investment, not only by the UK Government, but also by IES in Sweden.

There will be an opportunity for parents to meet with the new principal at the school on Wednesday, February 5, at 6.00pm.
